Previous visitors may remember Sci-Friday #130 where we first talked about the Jetson One. Regardless of how EVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) vehicles factor into the future of transportation, these updates to the Jetson One capture our imagination! Check out this update video, where they use the Jetson One to commute to work:
One of the first things Jetson One should be focused on is safety. As this Medium article points out, there are a number of safety factors that any EVTOL vehicle would need to address and currently, we don’t have the infrastructure or regulations to accommodate flying cars.
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try! Japan is already working through the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to start the type certification process for its two-seat flying car. Any successes over there would quickly turn into justification for EVTOL vehicles everywhere else in the world. Some scientists believe flying cars would be better for the environment than ground-based cars. That’s a very cool solarpunk future idea to contemplate!
