Yay, 1970s disaster scifi! For this Sci-Friday, enjoy the trailer to ‘Meteor,’ a goofy yet star-studded throwback science fiction movie. I remember watching this years ago on ABC’s ‘Sunday Night at the Movie’ and so it was a joy to finally see the trailer in all its dowdy, cliched glory. Take a look:
Meteor starred Sean Connery and Natalie Wood. The international cast also includes Karl Malden, Brian Keith, Martin Landau, Trevor Howard, Joseph Campanella, Richard Dysart and Henry Fonda. The film’s premise, which follows a group of scientists struggling with Cold War politics after an asteroid is detected to be on a collision course with Earth, was inspired by a 1967 MIT report Project Icarus. Interestingly enough, Project Icarus was a real MIT student project written in the spring of 1967 as a contingency plan in case of an impending collision with 1566 Icarus. I’ll talk more about Project Icarus in a future blog post.
Hope you enjoyed this discussion, please feel welcomed to dive down the rabbit hole of every other Sci-Friday I’ve published in the past couple years. Don’t forget to play Interactive Top Ten! Have a great weekend! 🙂
