Fun fact: Before Wes Ball directed the Maze Runner trilogy, he made a fun little CGI short called ‘Ruin’ that’s presented for this Sci-Friday. Take a look:
Ruin is a masterpiece of diegetic storytelling – no dialogue, no extraneous detail. A lone survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland confronts a faceless villain in a desperate bid for survival. If you want to see a guy do 200 mph through a ruined city and destroy the bad guy with his electro-katana, this is your jam. Allegedly, this is supposed to be a movie in development over at 20th Century Fox but your guess is as good as mine if that’s still true.
Science fiction needs to be fun. At the end of the day, emotional resonance trumps technical accuracy every time. I know it’s fun to debate whether the USS Enterprise could defeat a Star Destroyer, but those arguments miss the point. Readers and viewers come to your project looking for fun – give it to them! Please feel welcomed to dive down the rabbit hole of every other Sci-Friday I’ve published in the past couple years. Have a great weekend! 🙂
